Transmission and area substations are integral components along the power distribution path.

As our neighborhoods continue to grow, more and more area substations are needed, usually being placed within close proximity to urban and residential environments.

Because electrical substations are often located closed to residences where noise from excessively loud transformers can sometimes impinge upon residences, churches, and other public areas to create disturbances in these areas.

Transformers typically produce harder to mitigate low frequency noise around 120 Hz.

The characteristic "hum" of high power transformers is caused by a phenomenon called magnetostriction, which causes expansions and contractions with in the transformers core producing the characteristic hum and is inherent to transformer design and construction. 

Substations found in most urban environments are left unenclosed, are unattractive, and are surrounded by chain-link fences that provide no protection from transformer or site operational noise.

Typical noise mitigation techniques such as planting trees or constructing wood fences however, do not offer any reductions in noise levels produced by noisy transformers or from other potential noise sources.

While these techniques can produce varying degrees of psychological changes towards perception of noise levels, they actually do very little to actively reduce the experienced sound pressure levels.

Correctly designed noise barriers significantly reduce transformer noise and other electrical substation noise to meet today's increasingly tougher requirements for lowering the noise content in urban areas.
