Richard Bland College

During auditorium renovation at Richard Bland College in Petersburg, VA, the client decided to replace the acoustical treatment to clean up the look in the room and improve the acoustics.

Application Introduction

After analyzing the auditorium, a Technical Sales Representative discovered that the reverberation in the room was too high and there was a distinct flutter echo caused by the parallel sidewalls constructed with painted concrete block.

Because the room was used as a classroom, a small theater and musical venue, it was important for the space to be acoustically treated for multiple uses.

Treatment Provided

Acoustical Solutions, Inc. recommended and  installed 1" AlphaSorb fabric wrapped wall panels on the rear wall above chair rail and additional acoustical wall panels were spaced out on the upper sidewalls.

This served two purposes; The panels improved the acoustics in the auditorium and placement of the acoustical treatment was designed  in such a way that would be somewhat protected from abuse.

On the rear walls the panels were designed to be placed above the chair rail so they would not be beat up from chairs, cleaning equipment, etc.

The side wall placement also put the panels in an area that would get less abuse from people using hand rails and shoe traffic.

Quantitative Results

After the acoustical wall panels were installed, the auditorium was visually enhanced with acoustically sound treatments that fit within the school's budget, while at the same time improving speech intelligibility and creating a space live enough for theater or musical events.
