Quiet Trains = Easy Retirement Living

Despite only being about 150 ft. away from a railroad track, a retirement community in Virginia is peaceful and noise-free thanks to Acoustical Solutions, Inc.

A large sound wall was built between the community and the tracks to act as a noise barrier.  Since then, train noise has never been a problem.

Application Introduction

How does every person in a 97-unit retirement community maintain a carefree lifestyle of relaxation, comfort and fellowship when busy railroad tracks lie just 150 ft. away?

Well ... it takes one big sound wall, a lot of sweat and, of course, the services of Acoustical Solutions.

As developers of Heritage Commons, a full-service independent living facility in Williamsburg, Va., set out to create a relaxing and carefree retirement community, one of their hurdles quickly became the train noise which emanated from the tracks just 150 ft. from the facility.

Acoustical Solutions was contacted to help with the noise problem before any residents moved in.

Treatment Provided

The choice was made to assemble an AcoustiCrete™ Wall System measuring 300 ft. long and 15-18 ft. high.

The AcoustiCrete™ system is a heavy-duty, customized modular wall system that is well suited for "Design-build" projects.  Because of the innovative design of these systems, installation is easier and faster than other types of walls, which yields a reduced install cost and fewer delays.

Since Heritage Commons is made mostly of brick, developers decided to go with the brick finish for their sound wall.  Acoustical Solutions was able to perfectly match the sound wall's brick finish to the color of the facility's brick.

Project Results

Because developers took a proactive approach, and Acoustical Solutions was able to complete the project before any residents moved in, train noise has never been a problem at Heritage Commons.

"Unless I'm really listening for it, I don't hear the train," said Ken Smith, head of maintenance at Heritage Commons.  "I don't know of anyone ever complaining about it."

In addition to taking care of the noise, Heritage Commons' sound wall has added to the look of the community grounds.  The brick color match allows for the wall to blend in, making it part of the overall facility.

Product Questions & Comments (2 items)

  • Lawrence, Thanks for the question. Outdoor walls, like the one you see above, are effective when it comes to blocking sound coming from noisy neighbors. Many factors go into the placement of the wall though, such as distance from your house and your neighbor's, if you or your neighbors are on a hill, etc. You can also treat your home's walls. There are many options in this case, but the most effective is to install treatment within your walls. Please give us a call, we have an expert team of acoustical sales technicians standing by to answer questions about your specific situation.
