Since
project studios are usually small rooms, a very efficient
omni directional diffuser is needed to control first
order reflections from the rear wall and contribute
to promoting a diffuse sound field in the room. Attention
to fire-safety, cost, weight, aesthetics and ease of
installation were RPG's design goals.
To achieve these goals, a new 2-D diffusor was developed,
which is based on a primitive-root number-theory sequence,
based on the highest prime ever used. To manufacture
this 8" deep and extremely complex surface, with
virtually no draft angle on the 156 unique rectangular
phase blocks in a single 2’ x 2' panel, a new
plastic molding technology was developed, using a Class
B fire-retardant formulation. Since this new diffusor
resembles a metropolitan cityscape, it is called the
Skyline.
