Abtek Acoustics was given the task of controlling the
excessive sound build up (reverberation)
within the dining room as well as reducing the sound
levels coming from the open kitchen area connected to
a dining room at the popular Mustard Seed restaurant
in the Northtown shopping mall in Spokane, WA.
The Mustard Seed restaurant was planning an addition
onto the front of the restaurant. The interior decorator
had designed the additional seating area with drywall
walls, wooden tables and a stained concrete floor. The
owner of the restaurant wanted this dining area to be
comfortable for his patrons and realized that all of
these hard, reflective surfaces would cause considerable
noise build up within the room and he set out to find
a solution to the problem. Abtek Acoustics was called
in to fix the acoustical problem without sacrificing
the look desired by the interior decorator or the owner
of the restaurant. They put in place a standard drop
tile ceiling in the dining room and inserted into them
our AC100-BL
Signature Ceiling tiles. These ceiling tiles were
2’x2’x1” thick tiles with a black
matte facing that fit the desired appearance of the
room. These tiles offered a high sound
absorption rating (NRC
.80) that effectively handled the excessive reverberation
levels within the dining room. The restaurant’s
customers now enjoy their dining experience even more
knowing that they are not having to listen to conversations
and clanking silverware that was coming from several
tables away prior to the installation of the Signature
Ceiling tiles.
Now that the dining area had been treated acoustically,
it was time to look at controlling the sound that was
coming from the open kitchen area attached to the dining
room. This kitchen was loud due to its tile floor and
drywall walls that were covered with stainless steel
almost to the ceiling. To handle this problem Abtek
Acoustics installed our Signature
Sound Barrier Ceiling Tiles within the kitchen area.
These ceiling tiles had a two-tiered effect. First,
due to the high sound
absorption rating (NRC
.80) of the tile, the reverberation
that was building up in the kitchen and finding it’s
way out to the dining area was reduced. Secondly, due
to the sound blocking capabilities (STC
27) of the ceiling tile the amount of sound coming from
the kitchen transmitting through the drop tile ceiling
into the common plenum ceiling area shared by the dining
room was drastically lowered. Now when the restaurants
customers are enjoying their meals they no longer have
to listen to the sounds of banging pots and pans coming
from the kitchen area.
