Product Questions & Comments (6 items)

  • For an acoustical rated door of 50 STC, and with a fire rating of 20 minutes, what is the maximum window size for a door. The door will be a 3'x7' metal door. I am currently working on a military project that is requiring an acoustical door with a window.

  • Willard - The max window size for a STC 50 door is 15" x 20"

  • Does an STC45 opening need to be purchased as a "complete" assembly, or can an STC45 door be installed into a "standard" KD HM Frame, with approved sound seals? Ed

    Edward Udell - IDN Armstrong's

    8 Positive

  • Ed - Thanks for the question. Yes, an STC45 door can be installed into a "standard" KD HM Frame, but the frame needs to be very well insulated and caulked.

  • Riley,

Acoustical doors are complicated, but I can condense this down to a few solutions for you.

1.) Get a real deal pedigreed STC 50 Overly soundproof door. That's with the frame, hinges, door slab, and door seals. About 12 weeks delivery ARO, and estimated at $3600.00 for one 3'0"x 7'0" door. If it's in the budget, and you have time, get that, you will not be dissatisfied.

    2) If you have the budget but not the time, I would recommend our STC 47 door which is made by a metal fabricator just south of us who makes them exclusively for us. Includes frame, hinges, slab and seals. However delivery time is just 2 weeks, which is unprecedented in the sound proof door business, nobody makes them that fast. Same cost: $3600.00 for a 3'0"x 7'0" door.

    3) If you don't have the budget or the time, you need to get a 2" solid wood core door and a 770-2 door seal kit and essentially hope for the best. You will likely stop about STC 35-ish, possibly STC 40. Door seal kits are very difficult to describe verbally to someone who's never seen one. Its a pretty simple concept to grasp though once you have seen one, so we went ahead and made a product tutorial video for the 485-2 door seal kit, this can be found on the acoustical door seal kit product page under our Download Center.

There are a few other ways to go about this, but they start getting really custom and tricky. I would say these three solutions are going to be the "most correct" solutions for what you are asking for.
