Comfy and Cozy Sound Control at San Geronimo Comm. Presbyterian Church

Whether it's a sanctuary, a fellowship hall or a classroom, church sound can be a tricky thing.  Acoustical Solutions, Inc. recently worked with a California church to solve its sound problem in a multipurpose room.

Application Introduction

From activities as light as post-service snacks and beverages to important roundtable discussions, nothing was working in the San Geronimo Community Presbyterian Church's multipurpose room.

"It was irritating, and literally impossible to talk to the person next to you," explained Richard James, who was tasked with finding a solution for the church.

When they contacted Acoustical Solutions, Inc., the self-described "quaint, kickback, woodsy, Pacific" congregation, who meet in an old converted and expanded train station, had a room that simply wasn't designed for acoustics.

Hardwood floors, a rectangular shape, untreated walls and a lot of glass all contributed to sound in the room bouncing from wall to wall and creating flutter echoes.

Treatment Provided

The folks at San Geronimo Church, along with the advice of Acoustical Solutions Technical Sales Representative Donnie Williams, decided to combat their acoustical problems with fabric wrapped wall panels.

Not only did the church mount the panels on some of the walls in the multipurpose room, but they also took advantage of other available space by mounting most of their wall panels on the ceiling.

AlphaSorb™ Fabric Wrapped Wall Panels are used for sound reduction and reverberation control.  They are Class 1 fire-rated and offer various edge details and installation options.

Results

Richard says now his church's space is far from "irritating."

"Now, the room is ‘cozy,'" he said.   "I've noticed that even on a warm Sunday, approximately half the people wish to remain in the room rather than to go outside on our nice covered patio during the post service coffee & snack hour."

Bible study has improved as well.

"In a meeting or bible study, one can clearly hear even a very weak voiced person speaking across a nine-chair round table," Richard said.
