Gretna United Methodist's Acoustical Art

Gretna United Methodist Church in Gretna, Louisiana, knew they had a sound problem within their church sanctuary, however they did not want a typical acoustical wall panel treatment.

Application Introduction

In early 2005, Trey Harris the senior pastor approached Acoustical Solutions about treating the problems within the sanctuary; they had a reverberation time of over 4 seconds and a slap back echo problem. However, the biggest challenge that was involved was meeting the aesthetic looks desired by the church. They did not want a series of square or rectangle acoustical wall panels lining the walls.

Treatment Provided

When Trey Harris first came to Acoustical Solutions for an answer, he was told that he needed to treat the back wall of the church and that if he could draw out a pattern for the wall panels that Acoustical Solutions could make them to any size and at that time Acoustical Solutions suggested the possibility of a starburst pattern of panels above the doors with panels on each side of the doors having angled cuts at the top of the panels to match the pitch of the ceiling. Gretna United Methodist Church had an architect from the congregation draw up a design with rough dimensions and placed an order.

Acoustical Solutions had their CAD department draw up each of the panels and send it back to the church to double check the dimensions. Once the drawings were approved the church had the answer to both their acoustical and aesthetic problems within three weeks and everybody was pleased at how precisely the panels fit together to form this one of a kind acoustical treatment.

Quantitative Results

Trey Harris, senior pastor, had this to say "If my calculations are correct and I know they are at least very close, our sanctuary went from a 4 second reverberation time down to a 2 second reverberation time and the slap back echo had been removed completely by applying the panels you made for us."

The church secretary stated, "Everyone that comes into our church is amazed at how pretty the acoustical wall panels look, they have never seen a church that was able to utilize acoustical treatment to make it into a work of art."

  • We are looking for something to cut down on the reverberation in our church. I saw the article on the Gretna Methodist church; I'm very intersted and love the idea. Can you give me an idea of the cost on something like this?

  • Jan - Thanks for the question.

Unfortunately, it's very difficult to provide a ballpark estimate for treating a sanctuary because there are countless combinations of products, sizes, shapes, etc. that affect prices. The size of the room and the amount of reverberation in it are also major factors in determining what kind and how much treatment to use.

I would suggest finding the dimensions of the room and calling one of our sales people at 804.346.8350 or 800.782.5742. They are ready to answer any question for you, and after they determine the type of treatment you will need it will be much easier to provide either a specific quote or a ballpark estimate.

Thanks again, we hope this helps.

  • Looking to possibly put a print of the last supper onto acoustical sound board for our sanctuary. Can most any picture be used to create something like that or are there parameters? Thanks, Peggy

  • Peggy,

Thank you for your question, we do print photos on acoustical wall panels, called AcoustiArt, here is the product page:

    http://acousticalsolutions.com/73~acoustiart-sound-absorbing-panels

You can view the Artwork Submission Form in the Download Center on the right hand side of the product page for more details on submitting images for wall panels.

If you would like to put an image of the Last Supper on a wall panel, all you would have to do is find a very high quality, or very large version of this image. This is so the image can be enlarged or printed as large as the wall panel, without becoming blurry or distorted. Very rarely do people actually have images on hand that are high enough quality to produce a good looking wall panel, which is why we sometimes refer them to websites such as istockphoto.com or bigstockphoto.com. They carry many high quality images that can be downloaded for a small fee. Follow these links and see if you like what they have available:
